Salzkammergut
The Salzkammergut is an area in Austria that stretches from the city of Salzburg along the northeastern Alps to the peaks of the Dachstein mountain range. Salzkammergut translates to 'salt land,' and Kammergut is a German term for territories held by the princes of the Holy Roman Empire, in early modern Austria, especially the territories of the Habsburg monarchy. The salt mines in the Salzkammergut were managed by the imperial Salzoberamt in Gmunden from 1745 to 1850. However, the region is not only known for its salt mines today but has evolved into a modern mountaineering, climbing, and hiking area that surprises visitors with its breathtaking views.
